History

Approximately eighty-five years ago, on July 17th 1937, the Brazilian Society of Entomology - SBE, was established. There were two preparation meetings, on June 8th and 12th, followed by the founding meeting for approval of the first statute and board election where eighteen entomologists were present. By the end of 1937, the SBE already had fifty-eight associates, all founding members according to the article #48 of the statute.

Created within the São Paulo Biology Institute, by motivation of the members of the Entomology Laboratory, there had been a continuous concern for a media where members could expose their articles. Then, in 1938, it was agreed that the “Biology Bulletin”, published by the Clube Zoológico do Brasil, would become an official segment of the SBE. The partnership only lasted two issues from the bulletins "Boletim Biológico" volume #3 (3/4) and #4 (1/2/3) between the years of 1938 and 1939. The first volume published within the partnership brought a briefing of the foundation of the SBE, monthly meetings transcripts from the years of 1937 and 1938, and a member list until October 30th 1938. At right  you can see the inner cover of the bulletin, with the first board of SBE.

Further details about the history of the SBE can also be found on the volume #11 of the RBE, published in 1964 in celebration of the 25th anniversary, volume #26 (3/4), in celebration of the 45th anniversary, and volume #31(4) published on December 28th 1987, during the 50th anniversary of the SBE.
